Restory Show

Last summer God birthed the concept of restory in me. I prayed a lot about what would be next, moving from "living uncaged" to learning about and encouraging others to embrace a brand new story. This resonated through me as I considered a podcast. I dreamed of having people on the podcast who shared jaw-dropping stories, who exemplified faithfulness, sacrifice, humbleness, along with a big heart for Jesus. I wanted to see turnaround stories, where God had intersected a life, and that life was no longer the same. So I prayed. And God answered. He brought people to me. He reminded me of others. Instead of fretting about what to say or who to invite, this podcasting process has become something entirely different. God has made it sweet and nearly effortless. I cannot wait to share with you all these amazing interviews. And today's? It'll change your life.

Jimmy Hinton is a child protection advocate, a pastor, a husband and a father. In 2011, after learning that his (pastor) father had molested young girls, he and his mom turned him in to authorities. He is now serving a 30-60 year sentence, and won't be eligible for parole for 30 years.

How Our Stories Intersected

Jimmy and I met in person in September as members of GRACE. Together with several others, we'll be helping churches become certified in child safety procedures. If you'd like to learn more about that, click here. But we actually talked on the phone a couple years ago about the story he's sharing with you today. Every time I hear his story, I want to stand up and cheer. Jimmy believed the victims. He turned his father in to authorities. He did one of the bravest, gutsiest things I've ever seen done on behalf of victims.

He is now spending his life helping protect others from sexual abuse. He is unpacking the mind of a pedophile (his father) in order to warn us all about the traits and dangers of these kinds of offenders. Please be praying for him. This is dark, difficult work. Truly, Jimmy is one of my heroes.

In this episode Jimmy shares about his upbringing, the day he found out his father was a child molester, the roller coaster ride of turning him in and the long road to sentencing. In the episode I also mention his mother's gutsy blog about what it was like being married to a pedophile.

As in all my episodes, I pray for you at the end. It's my sincere hope that you'll walk away from the Restory Show changed and challenged.

The End

  • If this episode has literally knocked your socks off (sorry if your feet are now cold), would you please consider telling your friends and enemies and pets?
  • And leaving a review will help get the restory show in many more earbuds. Thanks in advance!

I've known about Jen and Bayley for several years, as Jen emailed right after her world exploded. She recently got back in touch with me to give me an update. You'll be amazed at both Jen and Bayley's faith after such an earthquake of pain.

How Our Stories Intersected

As I mentioned, we haven't actually met in person (yet), but I've been following their stories throughout the years as they've been unfolding. This is an honest, open, hard, beautiful episode. For sexual abuse victims, although there is nothing graphic shared, this could be a trigger.

In this episode we talk about Jen and Bayley's stories, both as a parent of an abuse victim and as a childhood abuse victim. The perpetrator was Jen's brother, Bayley's uncle.

As in all my episodes, I pray for you at the end. It's my sincere hope that you'll walk away from the Restory Show changed and challenged.

Ian has written a book all about the enneagram, called The Road Back to You. It's been really insightful as I've worked through some deeper issues in my life lately. If you're perplexed at how you do things, or you can't figure out your friend or spouse, this book will not only give you greater insight, but it will help produce empathy for others who differ from you.

How Our Stories Intersected

Ian and I "met" a couple years ago over publishing, and we have lots of mutual friends. I hope one day to meet him in person. He's a musician, pastor, writer, and all around creative artist. You'll notice in this episode just how thoughtful and eloquent he is.

As in all my episodes, I pray for you at the end. It's my sincere hope that you'll walk away from the Restory Show changed and challenged.

Courtney has written a beautiful book entitled A Different Beautiful. It's the story of her family's perspective after their daughter Brenna was born with Harlequin ichthyosis, a genetic condition that affects her skin. There is much to love about this story!

How Our Stories Intersected

003smallCourtney and I met in Canada when we were both guests on Huntley Street. I'm grateful we had the chance to share a lunch together, and I learned a bit more about her family's journey alongside Brenna, who will go to kindergarten next year! You really ought to follow Courtney's instagram feed because you'll see just how sweet and feisty Brenna is!

As in all my episodes, I pray for you at the end. It's my sincere hope that you'll walk away from the Restory Show changed and challenged.
